ABOUT VR (VIRTUAL REALITY)

Hello everyone. In this post I'm going to write about VR, a technology that brings you into different worlds at anytime. Firstly, what is VR?

"Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds. By simulating as many senses as possible, such as vision, hearing, touch, even smell, the computer is transformed into a gatekeeper to this artificial world."(from https://www.marxentlabs.com/what-is-virtual-reality/)

People are sometimes confused with the terms VR and AR. To remove this confusion, it can be said that VR makes your environment truly different; your environment turns into a virtual world whereas AR adds some virtuality in your real environment, that is, you are still in a real world, but there are some virtual addings. (to get more info about AR, you can check my previous posts.)

Implementation of VR in EFL/ESL classes can be very useful. It can provide learners with real-life situations, daily conversations even if they are in classrooms. VR creates a world where learners can interact with lifelike characters or with their peers. With the help of VR, learners can be exposed to the real use of English. They may ask/give directions, order food/drinks, or give/ask advice and so on. Through VR, all these communicative functions can be done more collaboratively and grippingly than traditional ways of teaching English.
